PGA REPORT –
‘Leo Hynes charged through to the PGA Irish Championship in the second and final qualifier at Seapoint.
The Ballinstoe professional topped the leaderboard on two-under-par 70 to be one to 37 qualifiers securing their place in flagship event, which is being played at the same venue between August 4-7.
But four players missed their chance of being in the starting line up at Seapopint for the 72-hole event, having been absent when a play-off was needed to decide the final four places.
Just three players were still at the course – Conor Russell, William Noble and Enda Maguire – with the final spot decided on a card countback with Mark Heinemann the recipient.
Seventy-six players went to the first tee in the morning and 33 booked their place without too much fuss after posting five-over 77 or better.
Hynes had the least trouble as he eased to the turn in regulation 36 with a bogey five at the first hole offset by birdie three at the seventh but his back nine was a pot-pourri of birdies, bogeys and just three pars.
A birdie at the long 10th hole was wiped out by bogey five at the next and a birdie three at 12 was balanced by bogey at the short 15th. That left him at level par but he finished birdie-par-birdie for a round of two-under-par 70 and a one stroke lead over Brian Cosgrove (Athy Golf Centre).’
