Simple chipping drill
Chipping:
When setting up for a chip shot you should have your feet close together, around a foot apart, with your weight on your front foot. It’s important to keep your hands ahead of the ball, make a short back stroke and follow through, it should feel like a putting motion almost. Keep your upper body still and your legs quiet. Don’t break your wrists during the shot as this will cause you to miss hit the ball.
To be more consistant with your chipping it’s important to get the ball up and onto the putting surface a quickly as possible & have the ball rolling like a putt. To do this you need the ball to land just on the edge of the putting surface. It is possible to use almost every club in the bag for chipping. It only takes a little practice to understand that a wedge will lift the ball higher in the air & will only roll a short distance, where as a 7 iron will not travel that far in the air but will run much further on the putting surface.
I encourage you to get out on the practice chipping area & green and figure out the distances that each club will run with a chip shot.
Chipping Drill:
The aim as mentioned above is to get the ball to land on the edge of the green and then run. So, set up a small target in your back garden and practice landing a ball on that target. Start from about 4 feet away. If you make 5 balls in a row land on the target then move back 1 foot and start again. Make sure to practice this with all of your clubs, not just your wedges.
