Winter Practice Tips

Winter Practice Tips

The following are some tips for both those players wishing to continue playing throughout winter or for those wishing to maintian their game but would rather not go out in the cold.

Work on your swing:-

Purchase a weighted club. This will help in the conditioning of the golf muscles as well as the strengthening and timing of the golf swing.

Short Game:-

Either purchase one of the indoor putting holes or simply put a coir or cup on the floor of your sitting room. Practice putting to this cup to maintain your feel and confidence for the stroke.

Maybe buy a chipping net or use an opened up umbrella in the back garden so that you can work on your chipping.

Driving Range:-

The driving range is always a good option in the winter months. If you choose to use a driving range it’s vitally important that you give yourself mini games & goals to achieve at the range or else you will end up whacking golf balls without making lasting improvements to your golf game. Try playing an imaginary round of golf – so this would mean hitting the club you would hit as if you were teeing off at a hole on your own course. Then play the next shot following on from how the last shot turned out.

Exercises:-
Don’t forget this area of your game. Building your strength and flexibility is a major component to anyone’s golf game. Simple stretches 3-4 days a week while watching TV will give you added flexibility. It doesn’t have to take 30 minutes. Just spend 5-10 minutes every other day and you’ll dramatically improve your level of fitness.

Work On Your Grip:-
Having a good golf grip is always important. You can work on this part of your game by getting a practice club, or better yet, getting a special training grip and holding it every day. You can do this while watching TV. Pretty soon a good grip will become second nature to you, and that translates to a better golf game.

For all those brave enough to go out in the wet and cold, remember the ball doesn’t travel as far in the air during the winter months. Simply allow for this by using a lttle extra club than you normally would e.g. If you would usually use an 8 iron on an approach to a green use the 7 iron.
